In 1971, Pink Floyd played two festivals and a small concert hall in Japan, which proved to be a success, leading to a larger tour the following year. The tour began in March 1972 and included six dates across Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Sapporo. The band had already started playing songs from their upcoming album, The Dark Side Of The Moon, during their UK tour in January, despite its release being 14 months away.

Prior to their Japan tour, Pink Floyd also spent a week recording music for the soundtrack to the film La Vallée. Their final show in Sapporo was considered the highlight of the tour and is still popular among fans. Although previously unreleased on CD, this concert has now been made available in its entirety. Interestingly, this would be Pink Floyd's last concert in Japan for the next 14 years.
